Started last year and made up of three coins, the Austrian Mint is issuing the Uncharted Universe series, which takes us to the depths of the universe and offers us a fascinating insight into three physical-astronomical phenomena.

Together with experts, we approach three physical-astronomical phenomena: the Milky Way (2021) , Black Holes (2022) and Neutron Stars. From something very small, a coin, we will become familiar with the infinitely large and even reach galaxies that no human being has ever seen.

Coin 2022 – Black Hole

A unique currency for a unique phenomenon. Concave on one side and convex on the other, The Black Hole illustrates the funnel-shaped regions of space-time where gravity is so strong that nothing can escape. One way to think of a black hole is as a vortex that pulls in everything in its immediate vicinity. Once past the point of no return, known as the "event horizon," the "singularity" awaits at the center. Stephen Hawking and Roger Penrose showed that it is a place where the curvature of space-time is infinite.

The interpretation of the black hole as a region of space from which nothing can escape was first published by the American physics professor David Finkelstein in 1958. But it was not until 1971 that Cygnus X-1 became the first black hole in space. be named as such, after being identified by several researchers working independently.

Although they store large amounts of energy, black holes do not emit light. For this reason, the first photograph of a black hole was not published until 2019, and even then only as an indirect image of the shadow it casts. It's no wonder so much is unclear about black holes. Among the most complex objects possible in our or any other universe, they are not only an experimental challenge, but raise a host of fundamental questions about space and time.

Coin motifs

The phenomenon of the vortex of black holes is illustrated on the reverse of the coin in the shape of a funnel decorated with a spiral printed in colour.

On the obverse of the coin, a cone rises from the flat silver surface, representing the curvature of space-time. "Cygnus X-1", the name of the first named black hole, is written on the right under "15 M☉", the solar mass of this black hole. In German, "Event horizon" marks the boundary between the observable and the unobservable in space-time, while "Singularity" marks the place of maximum curvature of space-time.
