In December 2021, the National Bank of Slovakia launched a public design competition for a commemorative 2-euro coin to be issued in 2023 and dedicated to the “100th anniversary of the first blood transfusion in Slovakia”. Today we already know which design was chosen to be represented on the coin and also the other two designs that were finalists.
Fourteen designs by nine authors were submitted to the contest. The Slovak Commission for the Evaluation of Commemorative and Collectible Coin Designs evaluated them in March 2022, including among the evaluation experts a historian in medicine, given the theme being commemorated.
The first prize and design that will be represented on the coin goes to Mária Poldaufová. The artistic solution of her design is based on a rationally balanced and centrally guided circular composition with a repeating rhythm of circles. In the middle of the smaller circle is an isosceles cross with blood group symbols. Towards the interior, a repeating three-stage outline with a dominant drop of blood is embedded, emphasizing the entire symbolism of the coin. Fragments of test tubes and stylized drops of blood alternate in the central circle.
The second prize went to Tomás Tulis. The author of the design works with a central composition, which is delimited by two units: a rectangular cross as a symbol of first aid and a circle that closes the relief. At the base of the cross, two human palms are depicted embracing a drop of blood with the letters of each blood group.
The third prize was awarded by the commission to Karol Liček. This proposal also uses a central composition. Its symbolism is expressed only in the text, which is incorporated into a calligraphically stylized irregular four-leaf clover. All the leaves of the four-leaf clover together form the outline of the single and double heart symbols, with a single drop of blood on the bottom leaf: the heart.
The expected date for the issue of the coin is March 2023.
