It is not that few medals have been minted, it is an error in it that can make an object initially intended to support the Ukrainian people end up being a coveted item among speculators.

History of the Medal from the beginning

Presentation of the medal from the Vatican itself

On February 24, 2022, Russia started the war against Ukraine. Before the eyes of the whole world appeared images that we hoped would have been relegated forever to the dark depths of our memory. But here we see again images full of the madness of man against man, suffering, fear and death, as seen in the destroyed cities, in the destroyed buildings, in the ruined roads, in the collapsed bridges, in the destroyed trees, in the dead, in the broken families, in the tears of women and in the tears of children, in the elderly uprooted from their homes, in the massacres, in the refugees, in the millions who flee, in horror. This is war, which Pope Benedict XV, in his heartfelt appeals to rulers more than a century ago,

The Vatican City State Mint issues this official medal on the theme of Peace in Ukraine as a way of joining the calls for a cessation of arms and a return to dialogue.

Two artists, Orietta Rossi and Daniela Longo, have designed each of the faces of the medal. The first represents three people fleeing a city destroyed by bombs with all their lives in a suitcase and a stuffed animal in their hands, guided by a young mother who walks towards us, reminding us of our duty to welcome and solidarity. At the top, in Latin and Cyrillic, appear the words PAX – MИP.

On the obverse, Daniela Longo represents a dove of peace, under the coat of arms of Pope Francis and part of the prayer she recited during the General Audience on March 16, 2022, when she made a heartfelt invocation for mercy for each person, who as Christ suffers because of war.

All proceeds from the sale of the medals will be donated to the Holy Father for charitable works in favor of the Ukrainian people.

The mistake that a quoted piece can make

As far as I know, the medal does not have a set issue volume, so as many as needed will be put up for sale. On this side there will be no speculation.

The medal was put up for sale for the first time on May 20 at a philatelic and numismatic exhibition in the city of Verona. A few hours later, someone noticed that the medal had an error in the inscriptions at the bottom. on the obverse indicates that it is the twelfth year of the pontificate of Pope Francis, when in fact it is the X and this would be the inscription it should have.

After being warned of this error, the sale is paralyzed, but it is too late, an undetermined number of medals have already been sold with the errata. Now from the Vatican it is announced that in a few days the medal, once the error has been corrected, will be put up for sale again. What remains to be seen is how those who have the medal with the error act, if they try to obtain an economic benefit from it or keep it as a curiosity.

If someone wishes to acquire the medal, obviously without the error, they can do so here , although at the time of writing this it is not available. Possibly, they are destroying the medals with the error and minting new ones with the correct year of pontificate.
