One hundred years after the 1924 Olympic Games, France is once again hosting the Summer Games, which will take place in Paris in 2024, an event of international relevance whose intensity is gradually increasing as the date of the event approaches.
On the occasion of the Olympic Games, the Monnaie de Paris wishes to celebrate the road to the Games. For this reason, it plans to issue between 2021 and 2024 a commemorative 2-euro coin each year, with an original design that celebrates the Games through the heritage of France and Paris.
The second coin in the series is scheduled to be issued on September 6, with an issue volume of 260,000 pieces.
The national side of the coin planned for this year represents the Winged Genius, a national figure and icon of French numismatics. He is depicted practicing the discus throw in an "ancient" way, referring to the Ancient Olympics. Its silhouette blends with that of the Arc de Triomphe, a key element of Parisian heritage. It forms a common axis with this iconic victory monument. In the background, an athletics track is depicted on which the Paris 2024 emblem is inserted on the right side. The indication of the "RF" issuing state is on the left. At the bottom is the year of issue "2022" and to the left and right, respectively, the mint mark and the engraver's mark, Joaquin Jimenez.
After knowing all these data, which are the ones that the Monnaie de Paris has presented to the European Commission and have been approved, we are left with the question of how the scarce circulation of 260,000 coins will be distributed. It is more than likely, if not certain, that this piece will only be available in coincards as it happened last year, despite the fact that 510,000 were issued.
Following last year's guidelines, there would be 250,000 presented in five different coincards, and 10,000 in Proof quality (BE for the French). The prices were 10 euros each coincard and 20 euros for the Proof, although very few could get the latter at that price.
