In 2022, after 16 years, the series of commemorative 2-euro coins “Federated States” has come to an end. This series will continue in 2023 with a new one that will run until 2038. The first of the new collection of commemorative 2-euro coins will be dedicated to the State of Hamburg and will represent the Elbphilharmonic building.
The German federal government in a press release today unveiled the 2 euro commemorative coin for the State of "Hamburg" which will be issued in January 2023. The coin marks the beginning of the "Federal States II" series, in which will honor a State each year by issuing a 2-euro commemorative coin depicting an emblematic place.
The order of the States is based on the presidency of the Bundesrat. The new series focuses on the cultural identity and characteristics of each region.
The currency for Hamburg was designed by the artist Michael Otto. It shows the Elb Philharmonic, the new icon of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The design represents the federal state of Hamburg through the impressive and detailed rendering of the concert building against the city's seascape.
In the core area there is also the mark of the issuing country "D", Federal Republic of Germany, the year 2023, the letter of the corresponding mint mark, the inscription "HAMBURG" and the initials of the artist. The twelve European stars are arranged on the outer ring of the national side.
