The Bank of Greece has issued this week a new collector's coin with a face of 10 euros minted in silver, belonging to the series "Greek Historians" and dedicated on this occasion to the writer, historian, chronicler of his time and military man, "Xenophon" .

Xenophon (430-355 BC) spent his formative years in Athens during the Peloponnesian War and was a disciple of Socrates. After the defeat of Athens, he fought as a mercenary, alongside other Greeks (known as the myrioi, "the Ten Thousand"), in Cyrus the Younger's campaign against his own brother, King Artaxerxes of Persia. Xenophon led the Myrioi on their long and perilous march back to Greece and later recounted the events in his Cyrus Expedition (Anabasis).

He was banished from Athens, probably for his Spartan sympathies. Military leader and man of letters, Xenophon left a rich body of work, popular over time for his simple and elegant style. His main historical work, Hellenics, takes up the thread of Thucydides (411 BC) and continues until the end of the Theban hegemony (362 BC). Although it is far from being a fair or complete account, it remains a valuable source for that period of Greek history. Xenophon also wrote seminal works, such as a dialogue on home economics (Oeconomicus), treatises on public finances (Ways and Means) and government (Constitution of the Spartans, Hiero), Socratic works (Apology, Memorabilia, Symposium), biographies (Agesilaos) and others.

This small piece of art has been created by the artist, George Stamatopoulos, in an effort to bring a different artistic perspective to such an important character. The coin is presented as you can see below these lines. The selling price of this coin in Greece is €70.
