The Bank of Latvia announces that the 2-euro coin commemorating this year 2020, whose theme is "Ceramic of Latgalia", will be issued next Friday, June 5 only in its versions intended for collectors, leaving the coin intended for circulation distributed in Rolls for later, at the moment in which they can be dispensed in the Banks of Latvia in the usual way, something that at the moment is not possible due to the health crisis caused by the covid-19.
I remind you that the issue volume for this coin is 412,000 pieces. 400,000 will be issued in rolls of 25 coins intended for circulation. 5,000 in BU quality presented in a coincard like the one you see in the image above can be for sale at a price of € 7.90.
Also from this Friday, June 5, the Euroset 2020 is issued with the regular circulation coins of the current year plus the commemorative 2-euro coin. A total of 5,000 eurosets will be put up for sale at the price of € 25.
The coin, made by the artist Gundega Rancāne and the engraver Jānis Strupulis, is dedicated to pottery from Latgalia or Latgaliana. This traditional pottery existed for long periods of time in two districts, Latgalia and Curlandia (Latgale and Kurzeme in Latvian, respectively), but only in Latgalia has it survived over the years and has been passed down from one generation to the next. Latgalia pottery is also part of the Latvian Cultural Canon.
The motif represents a characteristic piece of Latgalia pottery, the clay chandelier. It bears the inscription "LATGALES KERAMIKA" (ceramic from Latgalia), the name of the country, "LATVIJA", and the year of issue, "2020".
The coin edge, like all 2 euro circulation coins of the Republic of Latvia, bears the inscription "DIEVS * SVĒTĪ * LATVIJU *" (God bless Latvia). The new commemorative 2 euro coin has been minted by UAB Lietuvos monetų kalykla (Lithuania).
