Yesterday I presented you with the first commemorative 2 euro coin that Estonia will issue in 2021 under the theme "The Wolf, Estonian National Animal", of which most of us were delighted with its design. Today we will know the design of the second one, dedicated to the "Ugrofinish Peoples", which does not look much like the first one, making a comparison we could say that we are talking about beauty and the beast.

This coin is also the result of a design competition called by the Bank of Estonia to which 45 projects were submitted. The winning design showing the sketch of the coin is the work of artists Al Paldrok and Madis Põldsaar, presented under the name "Circle of Life".

The winning design is based on the cave drawings that can be seen in Lake Äänisjärv, which represent the hunter, elk, waterfowl and the sun, which form the symbolic life cycle of the ugrofineses peoples. The central figure is a Water Bird: the ancient and current peoples of Ugrofinians are closely linked to water birds. In 1970 Lennart Meri made a documentary about the Ugandan peoples and their ancient traditions, which he titled "Waterfowl Village". The rock drawings of Lake Äänisjärv are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The coin will go into circulation in the fall of 2021 with an unannounced issue volume.

Ugandan peoples are any of the various peoples of northwestern Eurasia who speak languages of the Ugandan group of the Uralic language family such as Khanty, Mansi, Hungarians, Maris, Mordvins, Sami, Karelians, Finns, Udmourts, and Komis.

The four most numerous Ugrofinish peoples are the Hungarians (13-14 million), the Finns (6-7 million), the Estonians (1.1 million) and Mordvins (744,000). The first three of these have their own independent states (Hungary, Finland, and Estonia).

Thanks to colleague Paul (Euromunter) for notifying me of this news.
