Estonia has already chosen the design for one of its 2027 commemorative 2 euro coins. The coin will be dedicated to Hiiumaa and will feature the Kõpu lighthouse, a structure that has been guiding sailors in the Baltic Sea for nearly five centuries.

The issue will launch a new series from the Bank of Estonia dedicated to the country's counties. Furthermore, it will not be a piece reserved for collectors: one million coins will be minted and introduced into circulation through trade.

The Supervisory Board of the Bank of Estonia has declared the project entitled "Dageida," by Kaupo Kangro, the winner. The name chosen by the author refers to the ancient name by which the island was documented in the 13th century.

Within hours of posting the image above, the Bank of Estonia released a new image of the coin. You can see it below.

 

The Kōpu lighthouse occupies the left side of the coin's core, its beams of light illuminating the horizon. According to the central bank, the luminous lines evoke the stripes on the skirts of Hiiumaa's traditional dress. The sea completes a composition that links the island's long maritime history with one of its most recognizable cultural elements.

On the right appear the name "HIIUMAA", the county coat of arms and the coordinates 58° 53′ 3″ N, 22° 38′ 40″ E. The indication of the issuing country and the year appear in the form "EESTI 2027", while the twelve stars of the European flag occupy the outer ring.

The lighthouse depicted stands at the highest point of the Kōpu Peninsula. Its existence is documented at least since 1531, although in its early days it functioned as a daytime beacon rather than an illuminated lighthouse. Today, it is considered one of the oldest working lighthouses in the world and has become the main architectural emblem of Hiiumaa.

The first coin in a new series

With this issue, the Bank of Estonia will launch its "Counties of Estonia" series in 2027, designed to showcase the diversity of the country's regions and their unique cultural characteristics. The choice of Hiiumaa as the starting point focuses attention on the smallest county in Estonia, comprised of Estonia's second-largest island and several nearby islets.

Nature, isolation, and the connection to the sea define much of its identity. The Kõpu lighthouse brings these characteristics together in a single image, providing the first installment of the collection with a motif recognizable even to those unfamiliar with the island.

A designer known in Estonia's 2 euro market

 

Kaupo Kangro is not a new name in Estonian numismatics. He also designed the €2 coins dedicated to the barn swallow, the country's national bird, issued in 2023, and to the cornflower, its national flower, put into circulation in 2024. Both also had a mintage of one million.

In the competition for the Hiiumaa coin, the second prize went to Heino Prunsvelt's "Dagö" design, and the third to Svetlin Georgiev Balezdrov's "Silmapiir" ("Horizon"). The Bank of Estonia has not released images of these two proposals.

The coin will be legal tender throughout the eurozone. For now, the exact issue date, the mint responsible for minting it, and any potential collector versions have not been announced.

The Bank of Estonia also notes that the image released corresponds to the winning design. Adaptation to the industrial process may require minor changes before the final version is approved and minted.
