IV Centenary of CENTEN

In 1623 the Prince of Wales, Charles, came to Spain to close the marriage agreement with the youngest daughter of King Philip III, Her Royal Highness Mary Anne.

Meanwhile, the Prince visited the city of Segovia and the “Real Ingenio”, the Mint of Segovia. As a tribute, seven gold coins called hundreds were minted. The Casa de la Moneda Museum preserves one of these seven pieces minted in1623, with the other six missing.

The centén was a Spanish 100 escudo gold coin first issued in 1609 under the reign of Philip III, it was also minted under the reigns of Philip IV and Charles II.

It weighs 338.05 grams of pure gold. Its diameter is 71.5 mm and it was considered the largest gold coin minted in Europe at that time.

These coins were not provided for in the monetary legislation of the time, so the king's authorization was necessary to be minted.

Royal Ingenuity of Segovia

The «Real Ingenio de Segovia» was an innovative and pioneering mint. The new manufacturing system produced coins mechanically and in series, being a precursor in more than 200 years to the modern factories of the industrial revolution.

Philip II would arrive here to coin more quickly and perfectly. The Segovia Mint is recognized as one of the oldest and most important examples of industrial architecture in Europe. Built by King Philip II in 1583, it was the first mechanized mint in Spain, as well as the first that belonged directly to the Crown. The plant was designed to carry out the entire minting process, from thearrival of the raw metal to the final product, the coin.

This Renaissance technology consisted of a system of rolling and coining using hydraulic mills driven by wheels, the roller press. Press for minting coins based on a system of parallel cylinders with multiple dies, between which a metal plate is passed that is engraved on both sides, and the pieces are subsequently cut out.

The machine was moved by hydraulic power, hence the name "mill press" by which it is also known. This technique was invented in Augsburg around 1550 and, before its implementation in Segovia, it was used in several European cities. The machines built in Hall (Austria) were brought to Spain in the largest industrial convoy known to date.
