Last March, the Slovak Mint, Mincovňa Kremnica, issued a 10-euro silver collector coin with a face dedicated to commemorating the Centenary of the Birth of Viktor Kubal, a famous Slovak animator, director and filmmaker.

Viktor Kubal (March 20, 1923 – April 24, 1997) made the first Slovak animated film, Studňa Lásky ("Love Well"), in 1944, but did not return to the genre until the 1960s, making animated shorts. for the weekly program Týždeň vo filme and, from 1965, with several animated films. All of them bore his signature: an abbreviated drawing style, a strong narrative component, cartoon humor, and sight gags. He also worked in the fields of cartooning, illustration, journalism, and writing. He later appeared on talk shows and acted in movies. Kubal made many award-winning animated films both at home and abroad. His biggest hits were the series Janko Hraško (“Johnny the Little Pea”), Dita and Šach (“Chess”).

 

The obverse of the coin features a profile representation of the bandit Juraj Jánošík, as he appears in the animated film Zbojník Jurko by Viktor Kubal. At the bottom is a filmstrip showing the walking figure of another bandit from the film. The name of the issuing country "SLOVENSKO" is inscribed above the strip, and the year of issue "2023" below. The Slovakian coat of arms appears in the lower right corner. The central frame of the film strip features the mark of the Kremnica Mint and, in the right frame, the stylized letters “KL”, referring to the coin's designer, Karol Ličko. The face value of the coin, '10', and the currency, 'EURO', appear at the top of the design.

 

While the reverse features a portrait of Viktor Kubal, along with the two eponymous cat figurines from his Poof a Moof animation series. On the lower right of the portrait are Kubal's dates of birth and death, "1923" and "1997", and his facsimile signature inscribed below the portrait.
