In 2009, the United States Mint began minting and issuing $1 coins as part of the Native American Dollar Coin Program. The coins feature designs that celebrate the important contributions of Indian tribes and Native Americans to the history and development of the United States.

On February 6, the one corresponding to 2023 was broadcast, dedicated to the American dancer Maria Tallchief (1925-2013), considered the first great dancer in the United States. She is the first Native American (Osage Nation) to hold this rank. In addition to Tallchief, four other Oklahoma Native American dancers achieved international recognition in the 20th century: her younger sister, Marjorie Tallchief, Yvonne Chouteau, Rosella Hightower, and Moscelyne Larkin. Known as the "Five Moons," her legacy of achievement and inclusion continues to influence ballet today.

The reverse design shows Maria Tallchief in a ballet pose. A nod to the "Five Moons" is rendered in a moon motif, while the four ballerinas in the background symbolize both Tallchief's contemporary American Indian dancers and the generations of dancers she inspired. The inscriptions featured on the coin are: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “MARIA TALLCHIEF,” “$1,” and “AMERICAN INDIANS IN BALLET.”

The obverse, common to this entire series of US one dollar coins, shows Sacagawea and his son Jean Baptiste. This indigenous woman from the Shoshone tribe accompanied and guided one of the most important reconnaissance expeditions of the United States territory. The face of the coin reproduces the face of a present-day Shoshone woman named Randy'L He-dow Teton, since no image of Sacagawea exists. The inscriptions are "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" (IN GOD WE TRUST).

The year of issue, the mint mark and the inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (OF MANY, ONE) are engraved on the edge of the coin.
