The Bank of Malta has issued a collector's coin in silver and face of 10 euros to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of John Borg, the edition is limited to only 600 pieces.

John Borg was born in Balzan on November 9, 1873. Although a doctor by profession, his love of Nature and Natural History led him to assume the responsibilities of Superintendent of Public Gardens in Malta in 1900. He was instrumental in creating new gardens public and to the reorganization of the existing ones.

Borg also undertook a Malta-wide tree planting programme. For many years he was secretary of the Agrarian Economic Society. He reorganized the Department of Agriculture and put experimental agriculture on a more secure footing. In 1921 he was offered the chair of Natural History at the University of Malta, a position he held until his retirement in 1933.

John Borg published several books. He also assembled a complete collection of cacti and succulents, considered one of the best in Europe. In 1945 he donated his collection of some 4,000 plants to the Argotti Botanical Garden. John Borg passed away on May 4, 1945.

While the reverse of the coin features the image of John Borg, the obverse features the Maltese coat of arms and the year of issue “2023”, all surrounded by twelve stars.
