On November 24, the Bank of Estonia (Eesti Pank) issued a euroset to commemorate the centenary of the Estonian Border Guard, it contains the eight regular circulation coins dated 2022.
“As the central bank, we want to use our numismatic products to highlight important people and events for the Estonian state and people. The vital work carried out by Estonian border guards has made them yet another attraction for foreign visitors to Estonia and, at the same time, an important security force to protect our nation's independence. The difficult security situation in the world today means that none of us need to be reminded how important the Border Guard is, and we wanted to use this product to wish all those who secure the Estonian border, resilience and determination in the maintenance of the security of our border”, said the Governor of Eesti Pank Madis Müller.
"All Estonian euro coins show the Estonian border," said Egert Belitšev, head of the Border Guard Division of the Estonian Border Guard and Police Board. “This euroset of coins dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Border Guard tells the story of the border in pictures and words, its importance and the people who stand firm every day so that our country's gate, the Estonian border, remains secure. and we can feel that we are safe and protected.
This year marks 100 years since the Border Guard was created. The Estonian Border Guard was founded in 1922 and its work was interrupted in 1940 by the Soviet occupation. The government established new checkpoints on the economic border on November 1, 1990, which effectively meant the return of the Estonian Border Guard. Although the national border has shifted over time, the main task of the Border Guard remains the same: to secure the border and protect the values and freedoms that are so important to the people of Estonia.
The euroset was designed by Aleksandr Kanunnikov of Bonamore, and 7,500 have been manufactured. Its retail price in Estonia is 18 euros.
