The Central Reserve Bank of Peru has put into circulation today, December 21, the fifth and sixth commemorative coins of the numismatic series "Builders of the Republic - Bicentennial 1821-2021", within the framework of the commemoration of the Bicentennial of the Independence of Peru . The coins have José Baquíjano y Carrillo and José Faustino Sánchez Carrión as protagonists.Through this collection, which consists of 9 coins, it remembers and pays homage to the characters who, between the 18th and 19th centuries, fought with their ideas or weapons, to achieve the freedom of Peru. All coins have a face value of 1 sol and can be used as a means of payment.
1 sol coin Builders of the Republic – José Baquíjano y Carrillo
Among the intellectuals of the Peruvian viceroyalty at the end of the 18th century, the author of Elogio (1781) stood out for his contribution to the emancipatory ideological process. This notable enlightened jurist expressed his disagreement against a system that was cracking due to the oppression of the less fortunate. In this sense, his work, which was nourished by the philosophical, religious, economic and political thought of his time, reflected the concerns of a Creole ruling class that began to question and reconsider its role in the face of the winds of change.
On the reverse of the fifth coin in the series, in the central part, the image of José Baquíjano y Carrillo de Córdoba can be seen. There is also a geometric design of vertical lines and the mark of the National Mint. On the left side, the phrase "BICENTENARIO 1821-2021", vertically, the denomination in number and the name of the monetary unit "1 SOL". Next to the denomination, the Bicentennial isotype can be seen, as a symbol of the series. The name of the character is shown at the top: “JOSÉ BAQUÍJANO Y CARRILLO”.
On the obverse, common to both coins, in the central part, the Coat of Arms of Peru is observed, surrounded by the legend "BANCO CENTRAL DE RESERVA DEL PERÚ", the year of minting 2022 and an eight-sided inscribed polygon that forms the coin fillet.
