A few months ago I announced that the Bank of Latvia would issue a commemorative 2-euro coin in support of Ukraine in 2023. Today, it has just been announced that on Thursday, December 15, there will also be a collector's coin alluding to the same theme.
The Latvijas Banka (Bank of Latvia) issues a silver collector coin dedicated to the freedom of Ukraine. The coin has not only a symbolic meaning, but also a practical one. With the help of the coin, the Latvijas Banka will make donations to support Ukraine; the profits made for each coin you sell will be donated to Ukraine. Thus, the purchase of this coin will provide not only moral, but also tangible support.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022 changed the course of world history and deeply shook us all. Ukraine continues to fight for its freedom and for the values of Western civilization, and therefore also for ours. The coin is a reminder not to get tired and tolerate what is happening in Ukraine. The freedom of Ukraine is a shared responsibility.
The author of the collector coin «For the freedom of Ukraine» is the Ukrainian artist Sergiy Maidukov. The artist has decided to focus the perspective of the coin on a single word – ВОЛЯ – which has multiple meanings in his mother tongue: FREEDOM; WILL; CAN. The author of the plaster mold is Ligita Franckeviča.
The competition for the graphic design of the coin “For the freedom of Ukraine” was unique in that, at the invitation of Latvijas Banka, it brought together five well-known artists from Ukraine: Kateryna Bielobrova, Nikita Kadan, Sergiy Maidukov, Roman Minin and Anna Zvyagintseva. . The nature of all the works submitted to the contest was deeply emotional and personal.
Starting December 16, the works of all artists will be exhibited in the lobby of the main building of Latvijas Banka (K. Valdemāra iela 2A, Riga), where anyone interested will have the opportunity to view them.
«During the first days of the war, very few people believed that the Ukrainians would be able to stop the overwhelming superiority of the Russian troops and force the Russian occupiers to abandon the conquered positions in a couple of months. Ukrainians continue to fight without doubting that the future will one day bring them back their land. Watching the war on our television screens, we friends of Ukraine especially appreciate how grateful we can be for the chance to live in peace. However, it also carries a responsibility to help Ukraine and its people. This coin tells us about freedom, perseverance and faith. Of faith in our own efforts and those of our friends", underlines Mārtiņš Kazāks, governor of Latvijas Banka.
The letters that touch the silver surface of the “For the Freedom of Ukraine” collector coin traverse the plane and rise above it or plunge into a silver mirror, each in its own rhythm. This is the reality of the near distance.
The bird with the small golden star that appears on the reverse of the coin is an image that represents a future political promise: the integration of Ukraine into the European Union. But not only that. It serves both as proof and as a reminder that the guarantee of freedom is an integral part of the flight of the spirit.
