On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Louis Pasteur, the Monnaie de Paris pays homage through a collection of 10-euro commemorative coins to the renowned scientist.
Louis Pasteur, a renowned scientist, left his mark on history with great scientific discoveries such as the first vaccine and the pasteurization process that today bears his name.
In collaboration with the Pasteur Institute, the Monnaie de Paris participates in this commemoration by donating 1 euro for each coin sold to the foundation to support research.
The obverse of the coin shows a profile portrait of Louis Pasteur and a microscope and a slide with microorganisms in reference to pasteurization. Louis Pasteur's quote "Sometimes to heal, often to relieve, always to listen" and some crystals that recall his early work in crystallography complete the composition. Louis Pasteur's name and his dates are visible at the top of the coin. At the bottom, the words "200 years" commemorate the bicentenary of his birth.
The reverse shows the face value surrounded by two branches, one of oak and the other of laurel, evoking the symbol of the Euro. The entire pattern on the reverse is framed by a set of lines that represent the hexagon.
The card where the coin is presented highlights, in one of its parts, a famous painting by Albert Edelfelt that represents Louis Pasteur in his laboratory. The bicentenary of the birth of Louis Pasteur stands out in particular thanks to the official logo created by Fabrice Hyber.
The other part details the key dates in the life of Louis Pasteur, from his birth to the inauguration of the Institut Pasteur.
