On April 15 we learned the reason to which the national-type commemorative 2-euro coin that Estonia will issue in 2022 will be dedicated. Today I am going to add a little more information about this piece that has been provided by the Estonian National Bank itself. Next year will mark the "150th anniversary of the Estonian Literature Society", and the Eesti Pank will issue a commemorative 2 euro coin in honor of this fact. The coin will use a design by Riho Luuse, winner of a design contest organized for the occasion.
The second place among the 34 proposals submitted to the design competition went to the graphic designer and associate professor of the Estonian Academy of Arts, Ivar Sakk, and the third place to the architect and student of the Martin Niglas academy. (These designs have not been made public.)
The winning design features an open book with the words of the first president of the Estonian Literature Society, Jacob Hurt: " Kui me ei saa suureks rahvaarvult, peame saama suureks vaimult ", which means " If we cannot be a great nation in numbers, we must be great in spirit.
The Estonian Literature Society was founded in 1872 in Viljandi. The society was founded to promote Estonian literature and writing and thereby raise the cultural level of the Estonian nation.
The winning designer, Riho Luuse, is the designer who also created the two euro coin dedicated to Paul Keres issued in 2016.
The prize for the winner of the design contest is 1500 euros, the second classified will receive 1000 euros and the third 700.
The minting of the coin will be prepared from the winning design of the design contest, this could undergo slight modifications for technical reasons. The Bank of Estonia will publish the final appearance of the coin before it is issued in 2022.
The legend of the edge of the coin will be the same as that of the normal two-euro coins in circulation issued by Estonia.
The issue volume for this coin will be 1 million pieces of which 10,000 in Bu quality will be presented in a coincard. The expected issue date will be during the first quarter of 2022.
