The Royal Mint has issued several coins with the same design to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Victory Day, which occurred after the Allies during World War II accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany.
After the news of the surrender of Germany, on May 8, 1945, the Victory in Europe Day (VE), was declared a public holiday. With pennants hanging from lamp posts and beer-filled bars, the war-weary Britons finally had a good reason to celebrate. People danced and hugged each other on the streets as joy circulated everywhere. "This is your victory," Winston Churchill declared, paying tribute to the British people who had remained fearful of the bombings and blackouts. Victory Day remains in the memory of all who witnessed it. Seventy-five years later, we want to thank the generation that gave so much honoring their spirit and sacrifice.

In 2020, the British Mint remembers the first and hopeful steps towards lasting peace and the promise of a better future with a 2 pound commemorative coin. Royal Mint graphic designer Dominique Evans captures the magnitude of events with a design that puts people at the center of the coin: lightning bolts emanating from the center evoke a sense of hope.
The obverse shows the traditional image of Queen Elizabeth II in a Jody Clark design and the face value of the 2 Pounds coin.
