In 2018 the Royal Mint of Great Britain, The Royal Mint, launched a series of coins under the name "250th Anniversary of Captain Cook's Great Voyage", consisting of three 2-pound pieces celebrating the legacy of one of the greatest figures in British history, recalling Captain Cook's voyage of discovery begun in 1768. The coins feature three intriguing designs by artist Gary Breeze, which combine to create a unique and complete image that tells the Captain Cook's journey story. The third and last coin of the series corresponding to 2020 has just been issued and put up for sale.

Early in his naval career, James Cook's detailed maps of the Saint Lawrence River were crucial to a successful British attack on French Quebec during the Seven Years' War. He was then given his own ship with the mission of mapping the island of Newfoundland, and his reputation as a good cartographer helped him gain command of HM Bark Endeavor for his first "voyage of discovery."

That first trip improved our knowledge of new places, towns, and plants, but Cook couldn't find the legendary Southern Continent. Spurred on by his desire to discover the truth of what lay in the far southern hemisphere, Cook embarked on a second voyage in 1772. His two ships, Resolution and Adventure, crossed the Antarctic Circle and sailed near the Antarctic coast, but They were forced to go back because of the cold.

In 1776 a 47-year-old Cook embarked on his third and final voyage, heading north in search of the elusive Northwest Passage, an ice-free route linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Cook took the helm of Resolution, with Captain Charles Clerke captaining Discovery. They approached less than 50 miles from the western entrance to the passage but were finally frustrated again by the elements, this time the freezing cold and the Bering Sea ice floes.

Cook then drove his two ships south to explore the island of Hawaii. The natives had never seen white men or such huge ships and assumed that he was a deity, entertaining him with parties and gifts. The crew responded to this by taking advantage of the island's food and natural resources, and relations with the natives deteriorated. On February 14, 1779 Cook tried to take the king hostage, and the Hawaiians, fearing that their leader would be killed, came to his aid. Cook was repeatedly stabbed and fell into the water, where he died at the age of 50.

Artist Gary Breeze commemorates Captain Cook's exploration of Australasia with a design featuring a Maori canoe very close to the bow of HM Bark Endeavor. In the background you can see maps of New Zealand and Botany Bay, as well as a spiral pattern inspired by the decorative palettes that the Maori gave him.

The obverse shows the traditional image of Queen Elizabeth II in a Jody Clark design and the face value of the 2 Pounds coin.
