This 2025, the Bank of Estonia pays tribute to Otto Strandman, one of the great strategists of modern Estonia, with a commemorative coin that not only celebrates his 150th anniversary, but also reconstructs, in the form of numismatic art, the spirit of a country that was seeking its place in Europe.

Strandman, born in 1875, lived through the most pivotal years in the formation of the Estonian state. He served as prime minister, the first speaker of parliament, head of state, and a highly skilled diplomat and negotiator. His decisions shaped the country's transition to a stable and modern economy, particularly during the 1920s, when Estonia sought to solidify its identity after the fall of the Tsarist empire. With vision, tenacity, and uncommon composure, Strandman helped lay the foundations of a young nation that needed leaders capable of looking beyond the immediate present.

For this commemoration, designer Tanel August Lind took a little-known photograph of the statesman and reinterpreted it through a play of curved lines that creates a subtle, almost vibrant visual effect, adding depth without sacrificing solemnity. Lind explains that he tried to capture the essence of the man: his discipline, his analytical clarity, and his ability to remain calm in turbulent times.

Obverse

The obverse displays the large coat of arms of the Republic of Estonia, the inscription Eesti Vabariik, the year 2025 and the original signature of Otto Strandman, a detail that reinforces the historical link with the person being honored.

Reverse

 

The reverse features a stylized portrait of Strandman, created using a curved line technique that brings a contemporary dynamism to the piece, accompanied by the face value of 15 euros.
