On January 6, 2026, the United States Mint will issue the thirtieth one-dollar coin in the American Innovation series. This coin is dedicated to the state of Iowa and Norman Ernst Bourlaug, considered the father of modern agriculture and winner of the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize.

Norman Ernst Bourlaug

The election of Norman Borlaug to represent Iowa recognizes his immense contribution to global agriculture in the 20th century. Borlaug (1914–2009) was an American agricultural engineer known as the “father of the Green Revolution” for developing new, high-yielding, disease-resistant wheat varieties that multiplied food production in developing regions. His initiatives, combined with modern farming techniques, saved hundreds of millions of people from hunger and malnutrition (he is credited with saving over a billion lives from starvation). For this unprecedented humanitarian achievement, Borlaug was awarded the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize, among other high honors. His work in Mexico, India, Pakistan, and other countries greatly increased global food security and is remembered as one of the greatest breakthroughs in the fight against famine

The Coin

The reverse design of the coin depicts Dr. Norman Borlaug holding a sheaf of wheat and ears, highlighting his pioneering work in developing resilient crop varieties that helped feed a growing global population. The design features the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “IOWA”, along with the name “NORMAN BORLAUG” and the phrase “FATHER OF THE GREEN REVOLUTION” in reference to this scientist's legacy.

The obverse common to all coins in the series features a profile of the Statue of Liberty, with the inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “$1”. Since 2019, this obverse has also incorporated a small privy mark in the shape of a gear, alluding to industry and innovation. On the 2026 coins, this symbol is modified to include a Liberty Bell with the inscription “250”, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding (1776–2026). (The edge of each coin is engraved with the year 2026, the mint mark, and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, common to the $1 coins in this series.)

It is worth noting that, since 2011, one-dollar coins have not been issued for general circulation ; the US Mint produces them solely for numismatic purposes for collectors, distributing them in rolls, bags, and special sets.
