What's happening with the Vatican 2025 commemorative €2 coins? At this time of year, they should already be in collectors' hands. However, neither the Jubilee coin, nor the one dedicated to the 550th anniversary of Michelangelo, nor the most recent one commemorating the Sede Vacante have been issued.
It's true: the Vatican had announced its numismatic program for 2025, and we know the coin designs, their mintages, and commemorative themes. We've even obtained excellent images of the three coins, something unusual before their release. But for reasons yet to be specified—though everything points to the accumulated delays in the recent issuance schedule—the coins have not yet been officially released.
Below, we review one by one the three Vatican 2 euro coins planned for this year, with their images, full descriptions and the context that makes them such significant pieces.
Jubilee 2025
Expected circulation: 91,000 units
Exclusive image Numismatic Visual
The Holy Year 2025 is an extraordinary event in the life of the Catholic Church. It is celebrated every 25 years and is marked by the opening of the Holy Door in St. Peter's Basilica, which symbolizes a time of forgiveness, reconciliation, and spiritual renewal.
The commemorative coin depicts that solemn moment: the Pope opening the Holy Door. The design is understated yet powerful. On the right, vertically, is the inscription “IVBILAEVM,” and next to it, the year “2025.” At the bottom, in an arc, is the inscription “CITTÀ DEL VATICANO,” indicating the issuing state. Above the door is the letter “R,” corresponding to the Rome Mint, and in the lower left corner is the designer’s signature, “D. LONGO.”
550th anniversary of the birth of Michelangelo
Planned circulation: 80,000 units
2025 marks the 550th anniversary of the birth of one of the greatest geniuses of the Renaissance: Michelangelo Buonarroti. The Vatican, deeply connected to his legacy, has chosen to pay tribute to him with a coin laden with artistic symbolism.
The design combines two of his most iconic works: the dome of St. Peter's Basilica, whose structure he designed, and a detail from the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, which Michelangelo frescoed. Vertically, on the left, appears his original signature: “michelagniolo”. It is accompanied by the “R” mark of the Rome Mint and the designer's name: “D. LONGO”.
The scene is completed by the dates “1475” and “2025” on either side of the image, and at the top, the inscription “CITTÀ DEL VATICANO” (Vatican City). This coin is expected to have a mintage of 80,000 units, also in uncirculated brilliant condition.
Expected circulation: 76,000 units
The design features the coat of arms of the Cardinal Camerlengo, the figure responsible for the administration of the Holy See during a vacancy. Above it are the traditional crossed keys and the canopy (ombrellino), symbols of the Apostolic Chamber. Around the inner edge are the inscriptions “CITTÀ DEL VATICANO,” “SEDE VACANTE,” and “MMXXV.” Between these, an abstract dove represents the Holy Spirit, guide of the conclave.
Beneath the shield are the letter “R” of the Roman mint and the names of the engraver and designer, “O. ROSSI”. This piece, due to its rarity and symbolic significance, will be one of the most coveted of the year, with an announced mintage of 76,000 coins.
So why haven't they been broadcast?
The numismatic community continues to wait, hoping that these three pieces —which are already shaping up to be some of the most interesting of 2025— will finally reach the hands of collectors.
