Recently, the Portuguese Mint has issued the fifth and last pure gold coin belonging to the “Numismatic Treasures” collection. This collection, as we mentioned previously, is made up of a total of five pieces, which are recreations made by the medalist Rui Vasquez, and their objective is to present the most exceptional and significant gold coins of Portugal, thus highlighting their beauty and value both historically and economically.

This new issue for the month of February is on this occasion a reinterpretation of the "Dobra" of 24 escudos, which was ordered to be minted by John V of Portugal, also known as "The Magnanimous". The monarch, who reigned in Portugal from 1707 to 1750, was especially known for his policy of neutrality, and during his reign he stood out for being a great builder. The “Dobra” of 24 escudos, minted in the 18th century, was an icon.

This new version, issued in 2024, maintains the previous aesthetics, highlighting the bust of the king and the weapons of the kingdom. Originally the coin measured 53 millimeters in diameter and weighed 85 grams. Today it remains the largest gold coin ever minted in Portugal.

On the other hand, on the back of the piece the central motif is shown as the coat of arms of Portugal in baroque style, along with the year of issue "2024". Also appearing on both sides of the coin: the “Casa da Moeda” mintmark and the name of the sculptor Rui Vasquez.
