The People's Bank of China is issuing a set of commemorative coins today, April 17, celebrating the country's polar exploration efforts on the 40th anniversary of China's first polar scientific expedition. This issue is made up of one gold piece and one silver piece.

Silver coin

The silver coin has a diameter of 40 millimeters and a face value of 10 yuan. It is composed of 30 grams of pure silver and its maximum circulation is 50,000 pieces.


The reverse design of the silver coin shows the icebreaker Xuelong 2, a scene of Chinese scientists extracting ice core samples and a polar bear are also depicted. We also see a partial map of the Arctic with dots representing China's two Arctic research stations, a beautiful Northern Lights in the background, and the legend "40th anniversary of China's first polar expedition," as well as the denomination of the currency. .

Gold coin

The gold coin has a diameter of 22 millimeters and a face value of 100 yuan. It is composed of 8 grams of pure gold and a maximum circulation of 10,000 pieces.
 

The reverse of the gold coin features images of penguins and the Chinese polar icebreaker Xuelong. It also shows a combination of images depicting a partial map of Antarctica with dots indicating the locations of China's Antarctic research stations, a fixed-wing plane for polar flights, and Chinese characters reading "40th anniversary of the first expedition." polar of China", as well as the denomination of the currency.
