The issuance by the Bank of Greece for next April 23 of the third coin of the "Philhellenes" series dedicated to Charles Fabvier is announced.

This series of coins is a recognition of Philhellenes around the world who contributed to the Greek cause, whether by joining Greek forces and fighting with them on the battlefield or by enlivening public opinion and political consciousness, as well as by the financing of the Greek War of Independence. Students, intellectuals, doctors or experienced military personnel from Great Britain, France, Germany, Switzerland and the Scandinavian countries, but also from the United States of America, were moved by the suffering of the Greek people, motivated by their love for Greece and the ancients. Greek ideals.

Charles Fabvier

Charles Nicolas Fabvier (1782-1855) was a distinguished officer in the French army. He served under Napoleon and participated in his campaigns. Separated from service after the Bourbon Restoration, in 1823 he decided to go to Greece and help in the War of Independence, convincing many experienced Bonapartists to join him. After the crushing defeat of the philhellenes battalion led by Karl Normann, Fabvier was in charge of recruiting and training regular troops, who stood out in several battles. He learned to speak Greek fluently and was very popular with his men. He was perhaps the most honest and selfless of all the philhellenes.

With great audacity, on November 30, 1826, he managed to break the lines of the besieging Ottoman troops and relieve the garrison of the Acropolis, which he defended until the surrender of the stronghold in 1827. In recognition of his services, the Third National Assembly de Troezen (1827) made him an honorary Greek citizen, while King Otto later awarded him the Grand Cross of the Order of the Redeemer.
