Since 2021, the National Mint and Stamp Factory – Real Casa de la Moneda has joined the celebrations for International Women's Day with the issuance of a coin. After those dedicated to Emilia Pardo Bazán (2021), Clara Campoamor (2022) and María de Maeztu (2023), in 2024 Margarita Salas will be recognized.

MARCH 8 INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

International Women's Day is celebrated every year on March 8 to commemorate the achievements of women around the world. It began with a protest that took place in New York in 1908 when women took to the streets to demand the right to vote, shorter working hours and better wages It has since taken many forms and is today a global event supported by numerous charitable foundations, NGOs, governments and academic institutions.

MARGARITA SALAS
 
 

Margarita Salas Falgueras (1938-2019) was a Spanish scientist, medical researcher and author in the fields of biochemistry and molecular genetics. She was a pioneer of molecular biology
in Spain, a great defender of women's rights and an inspiration for
generations of female scientists.

She has received numerous awards and prizes, including the Carlos J. Finlay UNESCO Prize in 1991 and the Santiago Ramón y Cajal National Research Prize in 1999. She is an Honorary Doctor from 10 universities. She was elected member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the European Organization for Molecular Biology. She directed the Severo Ochoa Molecular Biology Center. Salas published more than three hundred and fifty articles in international magazines or books and has 8 patents.

One of his greatest scientific achievements was the discovery of a technique that allows the smallest DNA samples to be amplified in sufficient quantities to perform a complete genomic analysis.

On the reverse, the image of Margarita Salas is shown with the symbol of the woman to her right, behind her appears the representation of a DNA sequence. Surrounding these motifs, the legends: «8-M INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY» AND «Margarita Salas». In the upper right part the face value "10 EURO" appears. To the left of the character is the Ceca mark.
 

On the obverse, the portrait to the left of His Majesty King Felipe VI is reproduced. At the top, in a circular direction and in capital letters, the legend FELIPE VI KING OF SPAIN appears. At the bottom, between two points, the year of minting 2024. A pearl graphic surrounds the motifs and legends.

The announced issue and on-sale date is Monday, March 11.
