For collectors and investors of bullion coins, the 2024 version of the Britannia is now available in its different weights and metals, although for its presentation we will look at the most popular, the one composed of one ounce of silver.
For over 1,100 years, The Royal Mint has combined tradition and innovation to create beautiful, safe and reliable coins. In 2024, Britannia continues to lead the way in defining security in the investment coin market.
This latest incarnation of the icon combines Philip Nathan's 1987 interpretation with four pioneering security features to create one of the most visually secure coins in the world. These additions have been applied both to decorate the coin and to make it secure, as the microtext bordering the design reads: “DECUS ET TUTAMEN”, which translates as “An ornament and a safeguard”.
At the bottom of the design, beneath Britannia's dress, a trident represents the icon's maritime history. When the viewer changes the perspective of the coin, the trident becomes a padlock underscoring the secure nature of the coin. The surface animation reflects and represents the movement of the waves behind Britannia and the tint lines highlight fine details such as the Union Flag on Britannia's shield.
The obverse of the coin bears the uncrowned portrait of King Charles III designed by Martin Jennings, along with the face value of £2.
