On November 28, 60 million commemorative circulation coins in China with a face value of 5 yuan dedicated to the Peking Opera were issued. This type of Chinese opera that began in the mid-19th century and became extremely popular among the court of the Qing dynasty. It is considered one of the greatest expressions of Chinese culture, being recognized on November 16, 2010 by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Peking opera is a performing art that integrates singing, recitation, theatrical performance and martial arts. Although it is performed throughout China, the main opera centers are Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai. The songs and recitations of this opera are performed mainly in the Beijing dialect, and the composition of its librettos conforms to very strict rules that value rhyme and rhythm above all. Its topics, which are focused on history, politics, society and everyday life, are intended to be instructive and fun at the same time. Music plays a primary role in giving rhythm to the show, creating a special atmosphere, configuring the characters' characters and serving as a guide to the theatrical plot. In “civil” music, string and wind instruments predominate, such as the delicate jinghu, with a high-pitched sound, and the dizi flute. On the other hand, “martial” music is performed with percussion instruments such as the bangu and the daluo. In the performances, characterized by their symbolic and ritual style, the performance of the actors and actresses adjusts to a choreography that governs the movements of their eyes, torsos, hands and feet.

Traditionally, stage sets and props are kept to a minimum. The actors' clothing is extremely colorful and their facial makeup, exaggerated, uses symbols, colors and concise motifs to reveal the personality and social identity of the characters they represent. The Beijing opera tradition is essentially transmitted through teaching by teachers to students, through which they acquire basic skills through methods of oral instruction, observation and imitation. Peking opera is considered an expression of the aesthetic ideal of operatic art in traditional Chinese society and remains, today, an element of cultural heritage universally appreciated throughout the country.
