The Bank of Poland issued a 20 zlotych silver coin with a face on January 16 to commemorate the 160th Anniversary of the January Uprising.

When we talk about the January Uprising, we are talking about one of the most important events in Poland that occurred in the 19th century.
Since due to the conscription imposed on the Russian army the young Poles started a spontaneous protest. And on the night of January 22-23, 1863, an armed uprising against the Russian occupier began, where the Provisional National Government called the nations of the former Polish Commonwealth to arms. This union formed the tripartite shield with the Polish Eagle, the Lithuanian Persecution and the Archangel Michael, including an inscription representing their own common goals: "Equality - Freedom - Independence".

The fight against the Russian Empire was carried out by means of guerrillas, since they were much inferior in number and external support. Finally the insurrection was suppressed by the Russians, but thanks to the different reforms carried out at that time, it contributed to the inclusion of the rural population in the national movement.

The January Uprising left a clear mark, both on the national heritage and culture that helped shape the historical consciousness of subsequent Polish generations.

On the reverse of the coin we can see a fragment of a drawing by Walery Eljasz-Radzikowski called "Insurgent Patrol in 1863", which represents a group of Polish insurgents. On the left side there is a stamp of the National Government of Poland with the tripartite shield with the White Eagle, the Persecution and the Archangel Michael. Surrounding the shield is the inscription "RZĄD NARODOWY RÓWNOŚĆ WOLNOŚĆ NIEPODLEGŁOŚĆ" (Polish National Government Equality Freedom Independence).

While on the obverse of the coin a stylized banner with different weapons appears as the main motif, including a scythe, a saber and a rifle from the time of the uprising. The coat of arms of Poland appears at the top right, next to the inscription "Rzeczpospolita Polska" (Republic of Poland), to the side, the year of issue "2023", and below its face value of 20 zlotych.
