In August 2020, the Slovak National Bank announced a competition for the design of the 2021 commemorative 2 euro coin celebrating the 'Centenary of the Birth of Alexander Dubček'. Fifteen works corresponding to ten authors were submitted to the contest. In October 2020 a committee of experts decided that the project presented by Branislav Ronai was the one chosen to be minted in the coin.
The author of the winning design chose to portray a middle-aged Alexander Dubček. This politician was one of the main protagonists of the Prague Spring. Process, which tried to democratize the socialist regime in Czechoslovakia in the second half of the 1960s.

The other two finalist designs by Peter Valach (left) and Štefan Novotný (right) were also shown by the Bank of Slovakia.
The expected issue date is during the month of November 2021, the issue volume has not been announced.
