A curious and original initiative that the United Kingdom Mint, The Royal Mint, has had to promote the issuance of a series of coins, all with the same design, dedicated to the legendary music star, the iconic David Bowie. This has consisted of sending one of these coins into space, (at the end I leave you the video), to pay tribute to the successes inspired by David Bowie's space, such as Starman, Life on Mars? and Space Oddity and of course the "Chameleon" himself.
The coin launched into space has managed to reach 35,656 meters of altitude, orbiting the Earth's atmosphere for 45 minutes before safely descending back to Great Britain. That is at least what they tell us, but let's not rule out that the coin could have fallen somewhere on earth and that some lucky person, as long as it has fallen on his head, has a beautiful and valuable memory.
The commemorative coin dedicated to David Bowie is the third in the series, "Music Legends", and has been issued after those dedicated to Queen and Elton John. The design is inspired by an image of David Bowie in his time when he lived and recorded in Berlin. The coin design includes the iconic lightning bolt that he sported on the cover of his "Aladdin Sane" album, etched as one of the most recognizable images of Bowie's career.
Born in Brixton, south London, in 1947, David Bowie began life as David Robert Jones. By the time he was 19, he had already adopted his iconic name and was taking the first steps in one of the most innovative and influential careers in the history of music and visual innovation. His music electrified generations, and his perpetual state of reinvention kept music fans enthralled.
The obverse shows the traditional image of Queen Elizabeth II in a Jody Clark design and the face value of the coin, 5 Pounds (Pounds).
