"Gena the Crocodile" is a 1969 Russian animated film produced by the Soyuzmultfilm studio. The film is based on Eduard Uspensky's book "Gena the crocodile and his friends."
Gena the Crocodile works like a crocodile in a zoo. He is kind but very lonely, so he decides to make friends. He puts up advertisements all over town and receives responses from a girl named Galya with a homeless puppy, Tobik, and Cheburashka, a big-eared animal unknown to science who came to town in a box of oranges.
Viewers became so fond of the clumsy Cheburashka that the film became iconic and the character ended up becoming popular in other parts of the world.
This new coin dedicated to Gena the Crocodile belongs to a series called "Russian (Soviet) Animation" that the Bank of Russia has been issuing since 2017. They are 25-ruble cupro-nickel coins that can be purchased in a normal or colored version. There is also a Proof version in silver, with a face of 3 rubles with the same design.
