In 2021 the series of American 25-cent coins America the Beautiful Quarters started in 2010 ends, once this collection is completed, the new coin with this face that will occupy the design permanently has been unveiled by the United States Mint . The design of the coin recreates George Washington crossing the Delaware River, an event that occurred on the night of December 25-26, 1776, which is included in the United States War of Independence. General George Washington, along with 2,400 soldiers and a large number of artillery, began his historic crossing of the Delaware River by preparing a surprise attack against British and Hessian soldiers during the American War of Independence.
The new design for the 25-cent coin shows General Washington commanding his troops through the night crossing of the Delaware River, a river littered with blocks of ice floating between which boats plow through, before the Battle of Trenton during the War of Independence of the United States. The inscriptions are "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "E PLURIBUS UNUM", "CROSSING THE DELAWARE" and "QUARTER DOLLAR". The designer of this coin is Benjamin Sowards and it has been engraved by artist Michael Gaudioso.
The obverse features the traditional image of George Washington created by John Flanagan, used since 1932. The design style and inscriptions revert to the original form in which they appeared before the 50 State Quarters Program began in 1999.
The coin will be put into circulation by the Federal Reserve Banks on April 5, 2021. The mints in charge of its minting are those of Denver (D) and Philadelphia (P).
