Next Tuesday, March 15, the Slovak Mint, Mincovňa Kremnica, issues its first coin this year, with which it commemorates the bicentenary of the birth of Janko Kráľ, a Slovak poet, jurist and revolutionary. His participation in the Slovak uprising during the 1848 revolution, from which he narrowly escaped execution by the Hungarians, made him a legendary figure in the memory of his compatriots.

Janko Kráľ was a Slovak poet and a leading figure in Slavic Romantic poetry. He wrote ballads and epics, expanding the genre with his reflections on himself, the world, and current events. Born in Liptovský Mikuláš (Slovakia) on April 24, 1822, Kráľ studied at the Lutheran Lyceum in Pressburg (now Bratislava) and there became one of the most radical poets of the "Ľudovít Štúr generation". He hailed and praised the 1848 revolution, in which he acted as an agitator and was imprisoned for it.

Besides living through the great revolutionary events of 1848 and 1849, he was present at two key events that took place in the town of Martin in the early 1860s: the approval of the Memorandum of the Slovak Nation by the Slovak National Assembly and the founding general of the Matica Slovenská (national, cultural and scientific organization). In his poetry, Kráľ captured all these events from the perspective of his direct personal experience. His works, scattered in various magazines of the time, would not be anthologized until after his death. Literary science considers Janko Kráľ as one of the most important European romantic poets.

The reverse of the coin shows an imaginary portrait of Janko Kráľ. His first name and his last name are inscribed in capital letters along the left edge of the design. His birth and death years “1822 – 1876” appear along part of the right edge.

The obverse depicts a character from a ballad by Janko Kráľ: the maiden of ZAKLIATA PANNAVO VÁHU A DIVNÝ JANKO (The Cursed Maiden of the Váh and Mad Janko). Her wild, wavy hair symbolizes the Váh River. The title of the ballad is inscribed at the bottom right of the design. On the lower left edge are the stylized letters “BR”, referring to the coin's designer, Branislav Ronai, and the Kremnica mint mark (Mincovňa Kremnica), composed of the letters “MK” placed between two dies. Above the portrait, on the left side, are the coat of arms of Slovakia and the year of issue "2022". The denomination of the coin "10" and the currency "EURO" appear at the top of the design, above the name of the issuing country "SLOVENSKO".
