The Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance has issued two coins dedicated to its ancient currency, the Lira, as part of its 2022 Numismatic Collection, through the Poligraphic Institute and State Mint, which is the Italian public company in charge of minting the legal tender in Italy.
The two coins, both gold, minted in a limited edition of 999 pieces each, have a nominal value of 20 and 50 euros respectively, and belong to the series "The reissue of the Lira", started in 2021 with the aim of pay tribute to the symbolic currency of Italy, which has accompanied important events in the modern and contemporary history of Italy until the arrival of the euro, which this year celebrates its twentieth anniversary.
The two coins differ in face value and gold weight: ¼ ounce in the 20 euro coin and ½ ounce in the 50 euro coin. The design, created by the artist Maria Angela Cassol, combines characteristics, such as the Proof finish with a satin background, which together with the work of the master engravers of the Casa de la Moneda, the numismatic and collection value and the value of the precious metal They turn them into little works of art.
The obverse of both coins depicts the iconography of the 2 lira with the well-known image of the bee, a symbol of Italy's industriousness and productivity after World War II. Around the inscription «Italian Republic»; in the exergue appears the name of the author «Cassol».
The reverse represents the reverse of the same coin, showing an olive branch flanked by the number “2”, indicating its value in the 1950s. On the left, the date “2022”, the year of issue of the coin; in the right field, the letter “R” that identifies the Rome Mint; below, the face value.
