The INCM or Imprensa Nacional – Casa da Moeda de Portugal, goes one step further in its commitment to raising awareness of Climate Change by involving the youngest in the design of a coin. This year the “Design a coin” project, which began in 2016, invited children from schools in the municipality of Guarda to submit their drawings to be captured on a coin under the name “El Clima”. Among the 582 proposals, the 1st prize went to Tiago Ferreira, a 6th year student at the Carolina Beatriz Ângelo School.

This coin is also the result of the efforts of the students from all the schools that participated in another part of the project, in which they were invited to collect plastic waste, which was then used to mint 6,000 very special coins. The colored discs, which symbolize each of the three colors of the recycling points, are a polymer adapted to be integrated into the metal at the time of minting.

This initiative has also sought to rejuvenate the interest in numismatics in schools, young people and their families and at the same time draw attention to the concern that we all must have with climate change, environmental protection and recycling.

The coin that has two versions is issued on two different dates. Today, March 3rd, we have the cupro-nickel coin that is put up for sale in Portugal at its face value, 5 euros. At the end of the month it will be minted in silver, at a higher price although not announced, which has the peculiarity of having recycled plastic as one more part of it.

The coin issued under the name "O Clima" presents on the obverse the planet Earth under a climate of rains and storms, in the center the coat of arms of Portugal with its armillary sphere, below the face value, and in the lower right margin the legend "Casa da Moeda" and the author's name, "Tiago Ferreira".

The reverse shows a part of the planet Earth and an urban landscape, under stormy weather, on the right side the year "2022", and below the legend "O Clima". The silver version, which has a Proof finish, has a circular polymer inlay in the center.
