An Easter coin with a difference, the Easter coin issued annually by the Austrian Mint in 2022 celebrates the anniversary of one of the world's most famous children's books in the German language this year. Written half a century ago, little I Am I is still hugely popular with children in Austria. In relatively few words, the picture book tackles timeless philosophical questions about identity, belonging, and self-esteem that remain as topical today as when this uplifting story was originally published.
Witty and amusingly written by Mira Lobe and beautifully illustrated by Susi Weigel in 1972, I Am I begins: "In a green and flowery meadow walks a colored animal." It goes on to tell the heartwarming story of a small multicolored animal made from scraps of cloth and wool, with dachshund ears, pony fringes, and hippopotamus legs. This cute little animal, who looks like a lot of different creatures, but doesn't really belong to any, embarks on an odyssey to find out what exactly he is, meeting and questioning different animals along the way. Despite the taunts and taunts, and even not being sure that he really exists, little I Am Me never gives up and, having been reduced to tears, everything will be much clearer to him.
The coin is decorated with a collage of characters in the style of images from Susi Weigel's book. Little Yo Soy Yo is in the center surrounded by some of the animals he encounters on his fantastic journey of self-discovery.
The Obverse of the nine-sided coin shows the coats of arms of the nine federal provinces of Austria, their face value, 5 euros, in the center, and in the outline the name of the country.
