On February 7, 2022, exactly thirty years have passed since the signing of the Maastricht Treaty. This treaty is one of the most important in the founding of the European Union. In honor of the anniversary, the Royal Netherlands Mint (Koninklijke Nederlandse Munt) strikes a commemorative coin on behalf of the Ministry of Finance: the Maastricht Treaty €5 coin.

The Maastricht Treaty significantly changed the institutions and decision-making processes of the European Economic Community. Existing EC treaties were extended to include areas other than economic affairs and nuclear energy in the common European policy. The treaty consisted of three pillars: the European Communities; a common foreign and security policy; and cooperation between EU governments in the field of justice and home affairs. In addition, a section on Economic and Monetary Union was included in the treaty, which led to the introduction of the single euro currency in 2002. The Treaty was signed by twelve countries: Belgium, Denmark, Germany, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom.

The 5 euro Maastricht Treaty coin was designed by the artist Rinus van Hall. Van Hall was inspired by the three pillars that form the base of the treaty and the place where the treaty was signed, the Government building in Maastricht.

On the obverse, King Willem-Alexander stands at the center of the roof structure of the building's iconic hall. The twelve stars symbolize the twelve original Member States.

On the reverse are twelve fountain pens drawing the temple facade of the government building, with three supporting pillars for the three treaty pillars. On the reverse there are 27 stars: the EU now has 27 member states.
