Since 1222 and for eight centuries, the University of Padua has served as a guide and example for many European academies, welcoming students from different languages and cultures and training the best elements of Europe's ruling classes. In its history it has collected numerous records: the first university botanical garden (UNESCO heritage since 1997); the world's first permanent anatomical theater; the first female graduate, Elena Cornaro; the only Italian university to receive a gold medal for military valor for its fight against fascism.
True to its motto Universa Universis Patavina Libertas, the University of Padua is today a great international university, attentive to the challenges of its time in terms of research, education and commitment to society.
This year marks the 800th anniversary of the founding of the University of Padua, for this reason the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato has just issued a 5 euro silver coin with a face to celebrate the anniversary.
The obverse of the coin shows the entrance door of the Palace of Bo, historical seat of the University of Padua and, to its right, the railing of the Scala del Sapere (Stairway of Knowledge) located inside the Palace and which is reproduced together with the frescoes by Giò Ponti that show the path a student follows to reach the Alma Mater, above, on the staircase, the motto of the University “UNIVERSA UNIVERSIS PATAVINA LIBERTAS”. On the left, the name of the designer «U. PERNAZZA” and the arc-shaped inscription “REPUBBLICA ITALIANA”.
On the reverse: in the center, there is the seal of the University of Padua, which stands out on the stylized reproduction of the Anatomical Theater of the University, the first permanent anatomical theater in the world; above, the dates “1222 – 2022”, the year of the foundation of the University and the year of issue of the coin, respectively; in the exergue, the letter “R”, which identifies the Rome Mint, and the value “5 EURO”.
