On November 16, 1922, the Portuguese writer, journalist and playwright, winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize for Literature, José Saramago, was born in the Portuguese town of Azinhaga. To celebrate the centenary of his birth, the Casa da Moeda de Portugal issues three coins in different metals, with the same design, dedicated to one of the great writers in the Portuguese language.

This José Saramago centennial commemorative coin was designed by artist Carlos Nogueira. On one side we have an evocation of the sky, sometimes clear, sometimes turbulent, a metaphor related to the firmament that unites us all. On the other hand, we have the land, a fundamental element of Saramago's work: the land we walk on, that gives us sustenance, and to which we will all return. Between these two realities, the cosmic and the earthly, as the writer knew and described, there is always man.

The coin called "José Saramago 100 Years" presents in the central field of the obverse a representative image of the sky, with the legends, all in the lower semicircle and from left to right: "Casa da Moeda", "Portugal", the face value «€7.5», the national coat of arms, the year of issue «2022» and the name of the author «CARLOS NOGUEIRA».

The reverse shows a representation of the earth and, in the upper semicircle, the legend "JOSÉ SARAMAGO 100 ANOS".

As I said at the beginning, there are three coins with the same design, one minted in 500 silver already on sale in Portugal at its face value, and two others, one in 925 silver and the other in pure gold, at prices, obviously higher, but not yet available.
