Like all animal groups, dinosaurs came in all shapes and sizes. The Microraptor gui, which weighed only a kilo and was no bigger than a chicken, was the smallest of all. Despite having wings and feathers, the protagonist of the tenth coin in the Supersaurs series was not a bird, but a real dinosaur from the early Cretaceous, about 120 million years ago.
We know this because numerous well-preserved Microraptor fossil specimens have been found in lakebed deposits in China's Liaoning province. Preserved in mud, the dinosaur remains were protected from oxygen and scavengers, providing paleontologists with a rare and fascinating glimpse into prehistoric life. Even the dinosaur's feathers were clearly visible, forming a fringe around the skull, along the neck, before merging with the long wing feathers. The long, elongated tail also culminated in a fan of feathers, two of which were especially long. Microraptor gui is also one of the few dinosaurs whose feather color can be calibrated. Although not a bird, the Microraptor nonetheless provides.
On the reverse of the coin, to the right, is a Microraptor gui printed in color in a forest landscape, clawing at a tree trunk; on the left, a flying Microraptor chases a dragonfly.
This coin and all those in the series have the peculiarity that they have been colored with special inks that make the silhouette of the animal represented on the piece shine in the dark.
The obverse of the coin features the silhouettes of the 12 prehistoric animals from the Supersaurs series. All 3 euro coins in the series are legal tender in Austria.
The Austrian Mint has officially issued this tenth piece in the series on February 16, 2022.
