This year marks a very important anniversary for the Danish monarchy, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark celebrates the 50th anniversary of her accession to the throne of the oldest continuous monarchy in Europe. An important event that the National Bank of Denmark also joins, putting into circulation, today January 14, coinciding with the exact day of the celebration, a commemorative coin of 20 crowns (2.69 euros). It has also been issued, with collectors in mind, the same coin in silver and Proof quality with a face of 500 crowns with the same design.

A new portrait of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark by sculptor Kathrine S. Moseholm appears on the obverse of the coin. The portrait shows the Queen in profile, looking to the right. It is inspired by paper cutouts and falls within the minimalist sculptural tradition.

On the reverse, there is a pattern created by the number 50 as a symbol of the 50th anniversary. The motif creates a visual reference to the four palaces that surround Amalienborg Square (Amalienborg Palace is the residence of the Danish royal family in Copenhagen). The reverse motif has been created by Jeanette Skov Jensen, Senior Graphic Designer at the National Bank of Denmark.
