On very few occasions I have dedicated an entry to the issuance of a medal, although they are also part of numismatics. They are collected much less than coins, although on many occasions they surpass them in beauty, the fact that they do not go from hand to hand as happens with circulation coins makes them much less popular but no less interesting.

Very successful and interesting I find a medal that has been issued by the Royal Canadian Mint, which makes us open our eyes to one of the collateral effects that the Covid-19 pandemic has caused in Mental Health. The pandemic, in addition to causing a health crisis, has left behind an emotionally exhausted society. The impact that this extraordinary situation has had on the population and among young people and adolescents has been even more important. Among these, there has been an increase in stress, anxiety, depression, eating disorders and even suicide.

The Royal Canadian Mint has put the Medal of Mental Health up for sale. This is meant to be a reminder that no one is really alone, that there is someone who is willing to listen, and that their feelings are important to others. This special medal also supports mental health resources and services in Canada.

The Mint will donate 100% of the proceeds to Kids Help Phone (Canadian charity) to help ensure that young people in Canada have access to mental health help at any time of crisis or need, 24 hours a day , the seven days of the week.

In 2020, Kids Help Phone recorded more than 4.6 million communications with young people, more than double the number in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Proudly created by employees of the Royal Canadian Mint, the Mental Health Medal features two different designs that acknowledge the effects of the pandemic on the mental health of Canadians. On one side of the medal, the design makes use of negative and positive space to present two overlapping silhouettes: the person on the left opens up about their problems, while the one on the right actively listens. The triangles indicate the state of well-being of each person, with unorganized triangles representing fragmentation of thought and / or a state of anguish; the organized pattern suggests a healthier state of mind, while the missing triangles remind us that "perfect" mental health does not exist.

Carefully sculpted facets on both sides of the conversationalists alter the way the light is reflected each time the coin is tipped. The effect beautifully represents the emotional dynamics of a conversation that could have a lasting and positive impact. The other side of the medal is a stylized maple leaf, a symbol of Canada that represents the spirit of the nation and the willingness to help each other in difficult times. This is reinforced by the words "santé mentale mental health" that are arranged like the veins of the maple leaf, a powerful reminder that mental health is an integral part of good health.

The medal is sold in Canada at a price of $ 9.95 (about 7 euros). The medal is made of nickel-plated steel which makes it magnetic. It is delivered together with a magnet, to be able to wear it, choose the side you want to show; The medal is placed on the clothes, then the magnet is placed on the other side of the fabric to keep it fixed.

I have found this initiative very nice that more than one should copy, not only in medals, but also in circulation coins with which to raise awareness in our society about this silent and silenced problem that must cease to be a taboo subject.
