The first coins that the Bank of Russia usually issues each year are the ones intended for investors. Although these do not have the same popularity as those issued in other parts of the world, they have also had their place for years in the agenda of collectors and investors in precious metals. The figure associated with these coins is that of Saint George, one of the most revered saints in Russia since ancient times, who is depicted and gives the coin its name “Saint George the Victorious”.

Starting from the 13th century, the image of St. George the Victorious was used in Russia and its neighboring states as an element of state symbols on princely seals, banners, coats of arms, and coins. The image appeared on the coat of arms of the Russian Empire and is now displayed on the national coat of arms of the Russian Federation.

This year (the same is not always issued) there are two coins that make up the issue, one made up of one ounce of silver and the other of 7.78 grams of pure gold.

Silver coin

The reverse of the coin depicts the image of Saint George slaying the dragon with a spear.

Saint George was a Roman soldier and member of the Praetorian Guard of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who died in 303 AD He was sentenced to death for refusing to recant his Christian faith. He was a great martyr of the Eastern Orthodox Church and a highly revered saint in both Western and Eastern Christian churches. He is the patron saint of Moscow, England, Georgia and Ethiopia. The legend of Saint George and the Dragon tells the story of Saint George slaying a dragon and saving a princess who was to be sacrificed.

The obverse of the coin shows a relief image of the coat of arms of the Russian Federation, the semicircle inscription “РОССИЙСКАЯ ФЕДЕРАЦИЯ” (Russian Federation), on the left the purity of the silver, on the right the content of the silver and below the mint mark.
