The first commemorative 2-euro coin that has just been issued in Germany this year, is in turn the last in the series Federated States (Länders) started in 2006. The piece is dedicated to the State of Thuringia and it represents the Wartburg Castle. A total of 17 coins make up the collection, 16 show representative monuments located in each of the regions and the other represents the link between them, the Bundesrat, which is the representative body of the Federal States of Germany.

For the occasion with which the Federal Republic of Germany concludes its current series of federal states, a place has been chosen that has a lot to tell: the Wartburg represents a thousand years of history, culture, language and religion. Walther von der Vogelweide (the most important German-language poet of the Middle Ages) recited his poems within its ancient walls, St. Elisabeth defended the poor, and Wolfram von Eschenbach wrote poems here. Richard Wagner helped make the Wartburg more famous when he moved the performance of the opera "Tannhäuser" here.

Last but not least, it also bears witness to another historical moment: Martin Luther translated the Bible into German here after his fake kidnapping, a religious and linguistic landmark. Wartburg has more than earned its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The motif presented on the coin, the work of Olaf Stoy, shows an interesting perspective with which the Wartburg is presented as a symbol of the Thuringian state: the view from below of the fortification system emphasizes the castle character of the famous building. Not surprisingly, the artist himself visited the place before its design. Fine details can be found in the characteristic keep: the German flag emphasizes the status as a national symbol, the cross underlines the importance of the Wartburg for Christianity.

The issue volume for this coin is 30 million, distributed among the five mints that Germany has.

The currency has been officially put into circulation on January 25, although the branches of the Deutsche Bundesbank, which is the one that distributes them, are currently closed for private clients due to the effects of the pandemic.

As I said at the beginning, after 16 years, the series of commemorative 2-euro coins “Federal States” has come to an end with the issue of the piece dedicated to “Thuringia”. This successful series will continue from 2023 with a new one that will run until 2038 following the same characteristics as this one, one coin per State representing a characteristic monument.
