On October 5, 1984, the space shuttle Challenger was launched , with which Marc Garneau became the first Canadian to travel to space. One of the seven members of the STS-41-G Mission crew, Garneau, conducted multiple experiments designed by Canada during the trip. After a mission of eight days and five hours, during which he surrounded the Earth 133 times. The astronaut returned to Earth being considered since then as a Canadian hero. He would later embark on two more space flights: STS-77 in 1996 and STS-97 in 2000.
To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the first Canadian in space, the Royal Canadian Mint has issued a trimetallic coin, a currency of which very few are issued in the world, with the image of the Challenger ship.
The reverse of the coin presents in the center an image of the Challenger superimposed on Earth. The realistic design of the space shuttle is surrounded by concentric circles that represent different layers of the Earth's atmosphere. The inner core represents the troposphere from which the shuttle was launched, the inner ring is the thermosphere where the shuttle orbits, and the outer ring is outer space. The 35 maple leaves that adorn the outer ring represent the 35 years commemorated, also identified with the "1984-2019" printed on the coin next to the name of the issuing country "CANADA."
The obverse presents the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, the work of Susanna Blunt, also surrounded by 35 maple leaves.

Comments from the designer
« Accepting the challenge of designing a coin with trimetallic technology, I worked with engineers and colleagues to create a currency that outshines everyone else. We considered the involvement and impact of each metal in 3D modeling, and then we approached the process, which involved the work of engraving, 3D rendering and postproduction tools ».
