The world's first airline that operates continuously, founded on November 16, 1920, celebrates its centenary next year. To commemorate the event, a series of twelve coins, one of circulation and another eleven of collection, are issued in the next few days and in February 2020, all with 1 dollar facials and minted by the Royal Australian Mint, on the occasion of the Centennial of the Australian airline Qantas, acronym for Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services.

Each piece of color coins that are officially issued on November 25 presents an airplane or an important story related to the 100 years of the Qantas fleet. The eleventh is a special copper coin that pays tribute to the original Australian "kangaroo penny," which served as inspiration for the flying kangaroo of the Qantas logo.

The Minister responsible for the Royal Australian Mint commented during the presentation of the coins: “From its humble beginnings in the interior of Queensland, the flying kangaroo is an integral part of Australia's renowned aeronautical industry. These aeronautical-inspired coins will allow Australians to participate in the historic centenary of Qantas and celebrate how far our aviation industry has come.

In addition, the Royal Australian Mint will launch a commemorative circulation coin for the Qantas Centenary with a $ 1 facial that will celebrate the airline's important contributions to the history of Australian aviation, the tourism industry, economic health, the effort military and national identity in the last 100 years. The Australian Mint plans to put five million of these coins into circulation as of February 2020.

The circulation coin design honors the airline's anniversary with a representation of a plane flying through the number 100. The plane is a stylized design of a Boeing Dreamliner, the latest addition to the Qantas fleet. The decorative line pattern at number 100 emulates fingerprints, which means that Qantas is part of Australia's national identity.
