A unique $2 coin has just been issued in Australia to commemorate the animals that served alongside the army in wars.

Animals have long served alongside Australian soldiers in times of war, providing transport and cargo, acting as messengers and protectors and even as mascots. This coin is intended to recognise, amongst others, the silent but essential contributions of carrier pigeons, camels and horses that served in World War I or mine and explosive detection dogs in Korea and Vietnam.

Introduced to Australia by the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation (AWAMO) in 2013, the purple poppy is a symbol and a poignant reminder of the exploits and bravery shown by these loyal companions to Australian soldiers, which is why it is a fundamental part of the design of this coin, which remembers the sacrifices of these four-legged and feathered animals so that they are not forgotten.

The reverse of the coin shows the symbol of a purple poppy in the centre, surrounded by images of animals that have served in war conflicts, as a tribute to their sacrifice. The purple poppy is an emblem of recognition of war animals.

The obverse of the coin features an effigy of King Charles III, designed by Daniel Thorne. The portrait follows the numismatic tradition of depicting the monarch on Australian coins. The text around the effigy includes the legend: “CHARLES III • KING • AUSTRALIA • 2024”.

The Australian Mint has sold 15,000 coins in rolls to authorised dealers. Each roll contains 25 coins.

There is also the BU quality coin that has a "C" mint mark in the upper right corner, presented on a card or blister.

Although this coin is not intended for circulation, it has the power to issue money and can be used for payment.
