There are few coins that I know dedicated to mountaineering and climbers, today I present one that I have found especially attractive, in which the image of a mountaineer in full ascent is captured in a masterful way, on its reverse. This Slovakian-issued coin commemorates the 50th anniversary of the first successful ascent of an eight-thousandth by Slovak climbers.

There are countless peaks and mountain ranges on earth, but only 14 of them exceed 8,000 meters above sea level, all located in the Himalayan and Karakorum ranges in Asia. It was there, a century ago, where expeditions of different nationalities began to compete to be the first to conquer the eight thousand. In 1950, French climbers achieved the first conquest, the Annapurna (8,091 m), and in 1964, Chinese climbers reached the summit in the last eight-thousand without climbing, the Shishapangma (8,013 m).

For geopolitical reasons, Czech and Slovak climbers could not participate in this race. In 1969, during a lull in political tensions, the Slovak mountaineer Ivan Gálfy managed to organize the "Tatra Expedition to the Himalayas" with the aim of climbing Nanga Parbat (8,125 m). The expedition, however, did not achieve its objective. Two years later, the unflappable Gálfy assembled another expedition of 16 mountaineers, mostly Slovaks. Starting in May 1971 they worked tirelessly to prepare an ascent route, again up the Rakhiot flank, and on July 11, 1971 four climbers undertook the final ascent from the highest camp, at 7,600 m. Only two of them, Ivan Fiala and Michal Orolín, reached the main summit of Nanga Parbat. 

The right side of the reverse design represents the top of Nanga Parbat, the ninth highest mountain in the world at 8,125 meters above sea level and the second highest in Pakistan. On the left side, in the foreground, is the figure of a climber on a rocky wall. In the upper left quadrant is the name «NANGA PARBAT». Above the name of the mountain is inscribed its height "8125 m", and underneath the year "1971", when the mountain was crowned for the first time by Slovak climbers. On the lower right edge are the stylized letters "MP", referring to the designer of the coin Mária Poldaufová, and the mint mark of the Kremnica Mint (Mincovňa Kremnica), which consists of the letters "MK" placed between two dies.

On the obverse, the mountaineers Ivan Fiala and Michal Orolín appear after reaching the summit of Nanga Parbat in 1971; they hold an ice ax to which the Czechoslovakian flag has been attached, and Fiala also holds the carabiner that he would leave at the top. The name of the issuing country "SLOVENSKO" appears at the bottom of the design. Under the left side of this name is inscribed the denomination of the coin "10" and the currency "EURO", below the right side the year of issue "2021" and the Slovak coat of arms, side by side.
